Toast...!

Yes Toastmasters!

What is she on about I hear you ask...?

Toastmasters is a public speaking organisation incorporated on 25th October 1928 by Dr Ralph C Smedley where young men could learn how to speak, conduct meetings, plan programs and work on committees, and he wanted to help them.

In 1973 women were allowed to join.  Yes.

Today Toastmasters is the leading global organisation which teaches public speaking and leadership usually for the weekly cost of a cup of your favourite coffee!  That's what I call good value.

There are over 332,000 members.  Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 15,400 clubs in 135 countries that make up the global network of meeting locations.

At my local club, we meet 2 or 3 times per month where newbies, experienced members and guests come together to accomplish 3 goals.

  1. To have fun
  2. To learn something new
  3. Leave inspired

So how do we use this at London Room Lets I hear you ask (again).

We regularly speak to tenants, JV partners and people from all walks of life and often have to stand up to large audiences with up to 200 attendees and share.

The confidence to do this was born out of regularly attending Toastmasters.

Many times, visitors will look on in amazement at the confidence displayed thinking and often saying, you are so natural!

What they don't know at that stage is:

  1. I learnt from the giants that went before me who were willing to share their knowledge and be my mentors
Not name dropping, but I cannot write this note without mentioning and acknowledging the following greats: Richie Dayo Johnson (first President of Speakers and a captivating speaker)
    - Mr David Thompson (Mentor/Guru and Evaluator supremo) and
    Jackie Barrie
(who first introduced me to Toastmasters over 12 years ago!)

    Thank you all.
  2. I practised this craft- I've practised, practised and practised some more.
    - Yes for over 10 years I was a regular.  I have somewhat stepped back as it's important to allow others time and space to step in to the light and it's important for each of us to sometimes, just step off the cliff and we'll often be surprised how we just fly.
  3. I learnt to own the stage
    - I've picked up at least 100 tips on how to captivate and speak from the heart and immersed myself in this art that it
    finally comes naturally.

It's when I think about it too much that the butterflies flutter and I have to remember that so long as they are flying in formation then we're on stage and there is a message to share.

... and I have to add - the most important message:

The POWER of the PAUSE! - Learn this, master this and teach this!
